Alibaba Plans Revenue Sharing for Major Users of Its Next Open Qwen Model

Reuters reported on August 7, 2026 that Alibaba plans to seek a share of revenue generated by major commercial users of the next version of its open Qwen model. If implemented, the approach could introduce a new economic layer to the open-weight AI market.

Open does not always mean commercially unrestricted

Publishing model weights gives developers substantial freedom to run and customize a model, but the license determines commercial rights and obligations. A model can remain open-weight while placing additional requirements on companies that generate substantial revenue from it.

For developers, the message is simple: before building a commercial product on an open model, read the license attached to the exact version being deployed. Do not assume earlier terms will remain unchanged. AI licensing is becoming more diverse, and legal terms and economics may soon matter almost as much as quality and performance when choosing a model.
